Fort Devens is used as a main hub for the Marine Corps Reserve and the Army Reserve Command. The Army has expanded the base into a new training center which occupies over 280,000 square feet across 57 acres. Fort Devens includes 25 ranges and 21 training areas and is located in the town of Ayer and Shirley in the counties of Middlesex and Worcester. In early 2011, the residents voted to make Fort Devens a legally incorporated town, but the petition process failed. There is currently no on post housing available at Devens but nearby Hanscom Air Force Base offers some housing alternatives for military personnel. The Hanscom lodging office can be reached at 781-377-2753. Personnel can also contact the South Weymouth Housing at 781-331-6489. Schools on Fort Devens are provided Shirley School District which offers half day Pre-K and a fully day kindergarten program with before and after school programs available. There is no charge for the school portion of the program, and registration can be accomplished at the main office or by calling 978-425-2630. There are 59 public schools and 12 private schools in North Central Massachusetts. Public schools do not charge for students riding the school bus. Private school coasts vary depending on the facility. The Army Community Services office can answer most school related questions. Call 978-796-3023 for further information.
